About TypeSpeedTest

TypeSpeedTest is a free, distraction-free typing speed test. No sign-ups, no ads wall, no clutter — just you and the keyboard. Pick a duration, start typing, and get instant results.

How WPM Is Calculated

Words per minute (WPM) is the standard measure of typing speed. One “word” is defined as five characters, including spaces. This standardization lets you compare results regardless of word length.

Net WPM = (Total Characters Typed / 5 − Uncorrected Errors) / Minutes

Raw WPM = (Total Characters Typed / 5) / Minutes

Accuracy = Correct Characters / Total Characters × 100%

Net WPM penalizes errors, so it reflects real-world typing performance. Raw WPM shows your gross speed before accuracy adjustments.

Skill Levels

  • Beginner — under 30 WPM. You're building the foundation.
  • Average — 30–50 WPM. Solid for everyday use.
  • Above Average — 50–70 WPM. Faster than most people.
  • Fast — 70–100 WPM. Professional-level speed.
  • Pro — 100+ WPM. Elite typing speed.

Tips to Improve Your Typing Speed

  1. Use all ten fingers. Touch typing is the single biggest speed unlock. Each finger has assigned keys — learn the home row first (ASDF JKL;).
  2. Focus on accuracy, not speed. Errors slow you down more than careful typing does. Speed follows accuracy naturally.
  3. Practice consistently. Ten minutes a day beats one hour a week. Muscle memory builds through repetition.
  4. Don't look at the keyboard. Train your fingers to find keys by feel. Cover the keyboard if you need to break the habit.
  5. Keep your wrists neutral. Good posture reduces fatigue and helps you type longer without strain.
